Hi there,

Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project, Inc. (SERCAP), a Roanoke, VA based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is partnering with USDA, Mountain CAP and the Entrepreneurial Learning Initiative (ELI) to bring the Who Owns the Ice House? Entrepreneurial Mindset Training Program to rural residents and communities in Southwest Virginia.

Through a Rural Community Development Initiative (RCDI) Grant from USDA Rural Development, ELI will train staff from Mountain CAP (Community Action Program) in Marion, VA to become ELI Trainers, and will enroll at least 60 interested individuals from Smyth, Bland, and Wythe Counties into the program. SERCAP will provide training and technical assistance to both the Mountain CAP staff and the program participants to help them achieve their personal workforce development, entrepreneurship, and economic development goals and outcomes.

The eight-week Ice House class, held via Zoom once per week, recently celebrated the graduation of more than a dozen students ranging in age from 18-70, including Steverson, a Warren County native and accomplished entrepreneur in his own right. “If I can change the mindset, I can change the procrastination,” said Steverson. “I can get past the hesitancy to do something even though I can see the need.”

The military coined the term “VUCA” at the end of the Cold War to describe the future state of the world as more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, and the way things are going, they seem pretty prescient in 2020.
