“How Successful Do You Want To Be?” Ice House Entrepreneurship Program Gets Students Motivated About Starting A Business

Students at Robeson Community College learned that starting a business is a big step that requires a great deal of time, thought, research, and funding, but in the end, it can be gratifying and fulfilling. Using the book, "Who Owns the Ice House? Eight Life Lessons from an Unlikely Entrepreneur" by Clifton Taulbert and Gary Schoeniger as the backdrop, students gained valuable insights into starting a business based on the true story of Uncle Cleve, who owned an ice house during a time of legal segregation in the deep south, along the Mississippi Delta.

Nothing Fails Like Success

By Gary Schoeniger. Originally published in League Connections, March 2023.

Community colleges across the country are facing unprecedented challenges, including declining enrollment, low completion rates, and budget constraints, to say nothing of the challenges resulting from COVID-19. The mindset that once enabled us to succeed is rapidly becoming obsolete. So, what does community college leadership have to do with an entrepreneurial mindset?

Organizational leaders often approach adaptive challenges through a managerial lens. With this approach, solutions are directed from the top down with little input from those affected by the decisions. While this approach may be well suited for solving technical problems, it is maladaptive when faced with adaptive challenges.
